Amos Milton Musser was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on May 20, 1830. In 1837, he moved with his widowed mother to Quincey, Illinois, and fought in the Battle of Nauvoo at age 16. He was subsequently driven to Iowa with his family and other members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
